Re:  Solicitation of Candidates for U.S. District Court Judge Vacancy

Deadline:  April 15, 2023 to submit resume and letter of interest

Dear Members of the Alaska Bar Association:

Following the retirement of Judge Timothy Burgess, there is a judicial vacancy on the U.S. District Court for Alaska.  To assist in obtaining the names of qualified candidates to serve as Alaska Federal District Court Judge, Senator Lisa Murkowski has requested that the Alaska Bar Association submit its list of recommendations to them.

In accordance with past practice, the Alaska Bar Association will solicit names to be included in a bar poll of its members.  If you would like to be included in the bar poll, send a resume and a letter of interest to Executive Director Danielle Bailey at bailey@alaskabar.org by Saturday, April 15, 2023.

The Bar poll will ask Bar members to rate the candidates who have indicated an interest in this position as extremely well qualified, well qualified, qualified, not qualified, and don’t know.  The poll will also include a section for individuals to confidentially comment on the qualifications of the interested applicants.  The Bar will e-mail the poll out the week of April 17, 2023, with a response date of May 15, 2023.

Following the bar poll, the results (excluding the comments) will be posted on the Bar’s website.  In addition, the candidates’ names, letters, resumes, bar poll results, and comments will be sent to Senator Murkowski.  She will use the results of that poll and her own research to develop a list of recommended candidates to send to the White House.

Sincerely,

ALASKA BAR ASSOCIATION

Danielle Bailey

Executive Director
