The Alaska Public Defender Agency is a statewide governmental agency with thirteen offices located around the state. Our offices are located in: Anchorage, Bethel, Dillingham, Fairbanks, Juneau, Kenai, Ketchikan, Kodiak, Kotzebue, Nome, Palmer, Sitka, and Utqiagvik. The Agency represents indigent persons charged with felonies and misdemeanors, parents in child protection cases, and persons in mental health commitment proceedings. The Agency’s representation goes from pre-trial through trial, appeal, and in criminal cases, through post-conviction relief, and probation and parole revocation.
Each summer the Agency hires 20 to 24 student interns who are placed in one of our thirteen offices. The Agency assists each intern in getting a student practice permit which enables the intern to represent clients, on their own, in most misdemeanor matters. Students represent clients in bail hearings, arraignments, and misdemeanor sentencings. Students also may have a misdemeanor caseload and may be tasked with reviewing discovery, drafting motions, talking to witnesses, negotiating with district attorneys, and handling relevant hearings. All of this is done under the supervision of an attorney. If possible, the goal is for each intern to second-chair a trial. Interns also assist staff attorneys as needed. Additionally, there is one intern in the civil section of the Anchorage office that assists attorneys in representing parents in child in need of aid cases and persons in mental health commitment proceedings. The Agency also welcomes interns/externs during the traditional academic year.
Interns must have completed half the classwork required towards graduation; this generally means they must have completed their 2L year. Interns must also have completed a course in evidence. The Agency cannot provide a salary, but we do pay for roundtrip airfare. We also ask for a 12-week work commitment.
