General Clerkship & Internship Information

Internships and Practice Waivers
In certain instances the Alaska Bar Association allows for non-AK Bar members (including law students) to practice temporarily under a practice waiver.  For information on temporary practice waivers, click here

Alaska Court System Law Clerk Information
Every year approximately 60 law clerks are hired to work for judges in the Alaska Court System.  Information on clerking with the Alaska Court System is available in the Guide for Prospective Law Clerks.  Generally the Alaska Court System recommends that applications for law clerk positions with the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals should be received no later than September 15th.  Applications for law clerk positions for the Superior Court and District Court should be received no later than November 1st.  Applicants should be aware that individual judges may make job offers before these dates.  Information on salary, moving expenses, benefits, qualifications, and how to apply can all be found in the Alaska Court System’s Guide for Prospective Law Clerks.

Job Description: Perform research projects and assist in discovery, motion practice, and trial preparation.  To ensure that all interns finish the internship with a good writing sample, every intern will work under the guidance of an AUSA to prepare documents to be filed with the court.  Interns will be given assignments with as many different attorneys as possible providing exposure to a wider variety of practice areas and professional contacts.  We also have brown bag lunches at which AUSAs, the defense bar, the judiciary, and federal agents speak.  Our goal is to introduce our interns to the federal legal system, to develop their legal skills and, and above all, to enjoy the Summer season in Alaska.

Internship Locations:  Anchorage (3); Fairbanks (1); Juneau (1)

Qualifications: Law students that have completed their first year.  Law school graduates are not eligible for student positions.  Students chosen will be subject to a background investigation, which can take up to three months.  Must be a U.S. Citizen.  Must provide information for a background investigation (includes inquiry into suitability issues such as illegal activity including drug use, outstanding debts, tax information, etc.).  Final approval for all applications is then obtained from the Department of Justice in Washington, D.C.

Minimum Participation Required: 6-8 weeks

Application packages must include:

  • Resume
  • Cover letter that addresses:
    • (1) why you are interested in the District of Alaska
    • (2) a preference for the Criminal or Civil Division
    • (3) geographic preference.  Note that the geographic placement for the Civil Division is limited to Anchorage, whereas geographic placement for the Criminal Division is available in Anchorage, Fairbanks, or Juneau.
  • Law school transcript
  • Writing sample

Application documents should be submitted in PDF format and combined into one document is preferable.

First-year law students: Applications accepted starting December 1st, in accordance with DOJ policy. 1Ls may not submit an application prior to December 1st.

The Alaska Court System (ACS) is accepting applications for a Law Clerk to serve our new Superior Court Judge in Anchorage for the 2025-2026 term. Cases will include Civil, Child in Need of Aid, Delinquency and Probate. The successful applicant will perform research relating to motions before the court, summarize case files, and prepare memoranda and recommendations. This position may also organize files, review case files for procedural sufficiency, and review orders and judgments prepared for signature.

Minimum Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited law school with an LLB or JD.

Benefits: We provide health insurance for the employee and eligible dependents, 12 paid holidays, personal leave, Supplemental Benefits System (SBS), and the opportunity to participate in the Deferred Compensation Plan. Travel and moving expenses may be eligible for reimbursement according to ACS policies.
