Internships and Practice Waivers
In certain instances the Alaska Bar Association allows for non-attorneys in law school to practice temporarily under a practice waiver.  For information on temporary practice waivers, click here

Alaska Court System Law Clerk Information
Every year approximately 60 law clerks are hired to work for judges in the Alaska Court System.  Information on clerking with the Alaska Court System is available in the Guide for Prospective Law Clerks.  Generally the Alaska Court System recommends that applications for law clerk positions with the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals should be received no later than September 15th.  Applications for law clerk positions for the Superior Court and District Court should be received no later than November 1st.  Applicants should be aware that individual judges may make job offers before these dates.  Information on salary, moving expenses, benefits, qualifications, and how to apply can all be found in the Alaska Court System’s Guide for Prospective Law Clerks.

Statewide

Alaska Legal Services Corporation (ALSC) seeks law students for 2025 summer clerkships, located statewide. ALSC is Alaska’s largest provider of free civil legal services. In an average year, we help over 7,000 low-income Alaskans address civil legal problems.

In our clerkship program, ALSC aims to match law students’ interests and skills with the needs of our clients. Law students are expected to collaborate in developing their work plans. Our law clerks are 1Ls and 2Ls and may engage in a wide variety of activities, including performing legal research and writing, engaging in community outreach and education, developing advocacy projects to meet specific community needs, and providing direct assistance to our clients.

Anchorage

Anchorage is a home rule municipality, chartered by the State, & the population center of Alaska with approximately 300,000 residents, including the outlying communities of areas of Eagle River & Chugiak to the north, and Bird Creek & Girdwood to the south. The Municipality of Anchorage, Department of Law, offers a wide variety of legal experiences in both civil and criminal areas. The Department includes approximately 24 attorneys in its civil and criminal divisions, as well as legal assistants in each division.

The Civil Division offers experience in a broad range of litigation and non-litigation areas including Torts (personal injury/property damage), Contracts (construction, services, grants, goods/supplies), Real Estate (foreclosure, abatement, condemnation), Elections, Civil Rights (police excessive force, other §1983 claims), and Employee Relations (wrongful discharge, civil rights, arbitration). Duties include detailed research and writing assignments with exposure to a wide range of litigation & non-litigation topics, including Contracts, Real Property, Elections, Employee Relations, Environmental Matters, Local Government & Land Use Regulation. 1Ls and 2Ls invited to apply.

The Criminal Division is responsible for misdemeanors, including municipal traffic violations, driving under the influence, domestic violence and assault, and mental health and wellness court matters. Criminal Division interns (2L only) are immediately certified for, and spend time daily in, the courtroom. In the general trial unit, the attorneys handle primarily driving offenses (operating under the influence, leaving the scene of a crash, reckless driving, and etc.), property offenses (trespass, malicious destruction of property, unlawful entry) and then some other stuff – assaults, disorderly conduct and etc. Responsibilities include daily courtroom work covering municipal misdemeanors, including traffic violations, driving under the influence, domestic violence & assault, and mental health & wellness court matters. 2Ls only (State of Alaska requires completion of 1/2 of law school required courses to be eligible for Court Intern Permit; Alaska Bar Rule 44).

For summer 2025, we can offer a $6,000 travel stipend, on the condition that interns can complete a full-time, 10-week internship. Also, all Municipal intern positions require a criminal background check. Applications are due by March 1, however, late applications will be considered if positions remain unfilled.

This fellowship begins late summer or early fall 2025 and seeks to encourage recent law graduates to work in the field of Native law. Fellows will have opportunities to pursue a wide variety of projects. We provide legal services to victims of crime. We also support and partner with Alaska Tribes to enhance their Tribal Justice Systems. We represent Alaska Tribes in State Child of Need Aid cases where the Indian Child Welfare Act applies. Alaska Native/American Indian applicants, as defined in P.L. 93-638 Indian Self-Determination Act, who are recent law school graduates or are 3L students are encouraged to apply here. The salary range $72,400-$89,000. This position is open until filled, but we strongly encourage interested applicants to apply by March 31, 2025.

Interns will have opportunities to pursue a wide variety of projects. We provide legal services to victims of crime, including representation in family law matters and protective order cases. We also support and partner with Alaska Tribes to enhance their Tribal Justice Systems. We represent Alaska Tribes in State Child of Need Aid cases where the Indian Child Welfare Act applies. The internship offers training; the opportunity to shadow experienced attorneys advocating on behalf of Alaska Tribes, tribal organizations, and Native people; and a competitive stipend ($26/hour). Alaska Native/American Indian applicants, as defined in P.L. 93-638 Indian Self-Determination Act, who are currently enrolled as law students are encouraged to apply here by March 31, 2025.

Legal Intern Summer Assignment: The individual occupying this Legal Intern position is responsible for providing project support to the Borough Attorney, Deputy Borough Attorney, and Assistant Borough Attorneys, as well as completing specific projects, as assigned.

The Legal Intern will assist the attorneys in various aspects of municipal legal issues, may research State and/or Federal law, legislative history, prepare legal memoranda, draft local laws, help implement mandated programs, and interact with other Borough staff.  The Legal Intern may represent the Borough in administrative proceedings before the Planning Commission, the Office of Administrative Hearings, or the Animal Care and Regulation Board. If the Legal Intern satisfies the applicable criteria of the State of Alaska Rules of Court, the Legal Intern may be involved in representing the Borough in court under the direct supervision of an attorney. Assignments are project-oriented and involve the application of basic legal principles, such as property, planning, zoning, taxation, procurement, administrative, and municipal law, and are performed with independence after project requirements are identified.

Notwithstanding any of the above descriptions all of the duties assigned and performed, including court appearances, will be within the limitations of the Alaska Rules of Professional Responsibility promulgated by the Supreme Court of Alaska.

Salary: $25.91 Hourly

Minimum Requirements:  Current enrollment and completion of at least one year of law school (L1, L2, L3); valid driver’s license; provide a resume; provide a writing sample; and provide an official or unofficial transcript.
