CHOICES, Inc is a nonprofit mental health provider emphasizing alternative treatment, personal choice, and consumer empowerment in recovery from a wide variety of mental health barriers. We are located in Anchorage, AK and currently serve adults with mental health and/or substance use issues, many of whom are homeless, transitioning out of an institutional setting, or otherwise facing barriers to accomplishing their goals. We provide peer support, intensive case management, therapy, medication management, and a wide variety of housing supports.
The Board of Directors meets once monthly via Zoom, with committee meetings throughout the month–time commitment depends on board roles and committee participation, with most members volunteering about 4-7 hours per month. Our role is to serve the board as a voting member; establish policies; adopt and monitor the annual budget; develop, review, revise, and adopt the business plans, operating plans, and short-term and long-term strategic plans; and appoint and oversee the executive director who will administer policies and plans established. Board members serve three year terms, with a maximum membership of two consecutive terms (six years of service).
Criteria for Board Members
- Board members must have an unwavering belief in the power and possibility of holistic recovery.
- Board members must recognize that 51% of the members of the Board must self-identify as living with mental health or substance use challenges, now or in the past, or have a family member that struggles or has struggled with such. This is not a requirement for individual board membership, but for overall board composition.
- Board members must submit and pass an extensive State and Federal Background check.
