The Alaska Bar Association offers our Lawyer Referral Service as a resource to our community. It is made up of Alaska lawyers who have signed up to be listed on the Lawyer Referral Service and each attorney that participates is an active member in good standing of the Alaska Bar Association.

Sometimes you only need an attorney for a specific task, and do not need to enter into a relationship with full representation. This is referred to as “Unbundled” legal services, otherwise described as “discrete task representation”. An attorney who provides a specific service to a client (who is otherwise handling an action pro se, or “in one’s own behalf” is providing one service out of the possible range of “bundled” services, otherwise referred to as full representation.

The Lawyers’ Fund for Client Protection is a fund administered by the Board of Governors to compensate individuals who have lost money, property or other things of value as the result of the dishonest conduct of a lawyer. The loss cannot be otherwise covered by any insurance or bond and it must meet the other specific requirements of Alaska Bar Rule 45 (Listed on the Alaska Court System website, under Alaska Bar Rules). Compensation is in the sole discretion of the Board after reviewing a report of investigation by members of the LFCP Committee.

Free Legal Advice, Legal Resources, and Education

MLK Day: Every year in January on Martin Luther King Jr. Day,  the Alaska Bar Association, Alaska Court System, and Alaska Legal Services Corporation hosts MLK Day free legal help events throughout Alaska. For the latest information, view our MLK Day page.

May 3, 2025 Free Legal Clinic: On May 3, 2025 from 12 PM to 4 PM, a free legal clinic for civil (non-criminal) legal issues will be held at the Fairview Community Recreation Center, 1121 E. 10th Ave. in Anchorage. Interpreters will be provided and all low-income people are welcome. Attorneys will provide free 30 minute consultations on issues such as immigration and detention planning, family law, housing, U.S. powers of attorney, name changes, probate, and more. Pre-registration is not required. This clinic is sponsored by the Alaska Bar Association, ACLU of Alaska, and Sol de Medianoche.

Elizabeth Peratrovich Free Legal Clinic: In October of each year, attorneys provide free legal assistance to attendees of the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention. Walk-in consultations are provided on civil (non-criminal) legal issues. The next EPLC clinic will be held on Thursday, October 16, 2025.  More information is on the clinic’s facebook page.

Elder Appreciation and Wills Clinic: An elders resource fair and wills clinic will be held on October 17, 2025 at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention. Clients must bring a completed questionnaire to the clinic and pre-register if they would like a free attorney to prepare a will, power of attorney, and/or advance health care directive. A questionnaire and pre-registration can be requested by emailing lmckenna@alaskabar.org or by stopping by the Elizabeth Peratrovich Legal Clinic.

Alaska Free Legal Answers: Offered in partnership with the American Bar Association, the Alaska Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice clinic in which qualifying users post civil legal questions to be answered by attorneys licensed in Alaska for free. Available 24/7 and 365 days per year, this website allows low-income Alaskans to ask three non-criminal legal questions a year.

Free Legal Answers (FEDERAL): Offered in partnership with the American Bar Association, the Federal Free Legal Answers is a virtual legal advice clinic in which qualifying users ask civil legal questions related to basic immigration and veterans questions to be answered for free by licensed attorneys.
