About the Clinic
Low-income Alaskans across the state can get FREE brief legal help from a volunteer attorney about a non-criminal legal issue. Call from a land line or cell phone, or connect by Zoom if you want to share documents with a volunteer attorney.
Free interpreters provided.
No appointment or pre-registration is required.
Need free legal advice but could not make this date? Get free legal advice from a volunteer attorney every day of the year at Alaska.FreeLegalAnswers.org. Qualified low-income users can post three non-criminal legal questions per year and a volunteer attorney will answer.

Attorneys will provide short consultations (about 20–30 minutes).
What to Expect
1️⃣ Waiting Room: You will be admitted one at a time from the Zoom waiting room. It may take up to 20 minutes for the hosts to greet each person individually, so please be patient and don’t hang up! We will serve people in the order they arrived in the waiting room. You may see a spinning circle. This is normal and you are still in line! Once admitted, do not start talking about your legal question right away. You will be greeted and will be moved to a private Zoom room.
2️⃣ Intake: In the private Zoom room an intake volunteer will briefly ask about your legal problem so you can be matched with an attorney with experience in that area. You may then have to wait a bit until a volunteer attorney can meet with you. It may take longer for us to get an interpreter. Again, please be patient and don’t hang up or walk away from your computer or you will lose your spot in line!
3️⃣ Legal Advice: You will have 20-30 minutes to talk with the attorney about your legal questions. If you have questions in more than one legal area (e.g. divorce and immigration), at the end of your first advice meeting you will be put back in line to meet with a different attorney. So think about which legal issue is most important for you to get answers on first. The attorney(s) you talk with will not represent you after the clinic.
4️⃣ Leave the Clinic/Meeting: After you have received advice from the attorney(s), you will be asked to leave the Zoom meeting.
This clinic provides legal advice only and does not create ongoing attorney representation. The attorneys will not prepare any documents for you or go to court with you.
How to Attend the Clinic
Getting Ready:
Prior to joining, we recommend that you:
- Remember you can always call from a land line or cell phone!
- Find a quiet place with a strong phone or internet connection. You don’t want to spend your 20 minutes with the attorney dealing with technical issues!
- Have any documents up on the screen of your device so that you can share them, if you wish.
- Test your microphone, speakers, and camera (if you want to use your camera) on the device that you will be using to make sure it is set up correctly with Zoom. You can test it by clicking here.
- If you do not want to share your name with the attorney, follow these directions on Joining a Zoom Meeting Anonymously before logging in.
- If you have more than one legal problem in different areas (e.g. you want to modify your child support order but also have a question about food stamps), decide which question is most important to get answered. We will answer both questions, time permitting, but you may have to wait for a second attorney to be available for your second question.
- If you need an interpreter, please do your best to say the language you need. Be patient while we find an interpreter for you.
Confidentiality
Your participation is confidential. You may choose to keep your camera off and may list a fake name when you join the Zoom. You can find instructions here on Joining a Zoom Meeting Anonymously.
Note that a few lawyers may not be able to help you if you don’t share your name and the name of the opposing party (the person or company you have a dispute with). If you are willing to wait a bit longer, we can try to match you with a different lawyer who does not require you to disclose your name.
